Delhi to Spiti Valley by Road: Complete 7-Day Self-Drive Itinerary 2026
A practical family road-trip blueprint for driving from Delhi to Spiti Valley in your own Suzuki Fronx, with daytime driving, 6–8 hour driving limits, budget stays, sightseeing, road distances, safety planning and a conditional Chandratal option.
The most practical strategy is to enter Spiti through Shimla–Kinnaur–Kaza and return through Manali–Chandigarh–Delhi. This creates a road-trip circuit instead of repeating the same route.
Trip at a Glance
Everything you need to understand the trip before starting.
First: Is a 7-Day Spiti Road Trip Practical?
Yes, but it needs disciplined planning. A relaxed Spiti circuit normally deserves more than seven days. With only seven days, the goal should be to experience the main Kinnaur and Spiti landscapes rather than trying to cover every village.
⚠️ Important October Planning Rule
October is the end of the high-altitude road-trip season around Kunzum Pass and Chandratal. Road conditions can change quickly after snowfall. Therefore, Chandratal must remain a conditional attraction, not a fixed booking commitment.
For this particular seven-day family itinerary, the safest base plan does not force an overnight stay at Chandratal. If the road, weather and accommodation are confirmed safe very close to the travel date, the Chandratal option can be activated.

Delhi → Narkanda
Start the Himalayan road trip without pushing too far into the mountains.
Leave Delhi early in the morning. The objective is to reach Narkanda before evening instead of continuing deeper into Kinnaur after dark.
Recommended stops
- Breakfast around Karnal / Kurukshetra side
- Lunch around Chandigarh / Solan
- Short photo stop near Shimla if time permits
- Reach Narkanda before sunset
- Early dinner and proper rest
Evening in Narkanda
Keep the evening relaxed. Walk around the local market, enjoy the mountain atmosphere and prepare the vehicle for the Kinnaur section.
The Snow Trail Narkanda B&B Homestay
A family-friendly style of stay near the skiing area. Confirm parking, heating and room configuration before booking.
Narkanda Heights / Main Market Area
Choose a property close to the main road with dedicated parking, hot water and family rooms.
Narkanda → Rampur → Reckong Peo → Kalpa
Enter Kinnaur and finish the day among apple orchards and views of the Kinnaur Himalayas.
This is a shorter-distance day, but mountain roads require patience. Do not judge the journey by kilometres alone.
Explore around Kalpa
- Kalpa village
- Roghi village / road viewpoint if road conditions permit
- Kinnaur Kailash views
- Suicide Point viewpoint area only where officially accessible
- Local apple orchards and village lanes
- Sunset photography from a safe viewpoint
Kalpa → Nako → Tabo → Kaza
The main transition day from Kinnaur into the cold desert of Spiti.
Leave early. This is the most important driving day of the trip. Keep plenty of daylight in reserve because the final Kaza section can take longer than expected.
Nako stop
Take a short break at Nako. Walk around the lake and old village area only if everyone is comfortable with the altitude.
Tabo stop
If your timing permits, visit Tabo Monastery. Tabo is one of the cultural highlights of the Spiti route and is famous for its ancient Buddhist heritage and murals.
Dhankar option
Dhankar is spectacular but requires an additional detour. Because this itinerary has a strict seven-day limit, visit it only if you are comfortably ahead of schedule.
Tabo Monastery
Kaza Local Exploration Day
No long-distance driving. Use this day for acclimatisation and the most important Spiti Valley sights.
Morning: Key Monastery
Start early and visit Key Monastery. The monastery is one of the defining landmarks of Spiti and sits dramatically above the valley.
Late Morning: Chicham Bridge
Continue toward Chicham for the dramatic gorge and bridge views. Keep the visit short and avoid unnecessary walking at high altitude.
Afternoon: Kibber
Visit Kibber village and enjoy the high-altitude landscape. Return to Kaza before evening.
Evening: Kaza Market
- Kaza main market
- Local cafes
- Himalayan handicrafts
- Local food
- Prepare fuel, water and luggage for the next day
Kaza → Losar → Kunzum Sector → Manali
Leave Kaza very early and use only daylight for the high mountain crossing toward Manali.
⚠️ Do Not Force This Day
The Kaza–Kunzum–Batal–Manali section is highly dependent on road conditions. If the route is delayed or unsafe, do not continue into darkness.
A safe mountain-road trip is more important than completing the seven-day schedule exactly as written.
🌙 Chandratal Lake: Conditional October 2026 Option
Chandratal is intentionally not treated as a guaranteed stop in this seven-day plan. The lake is around 4,300 metres above sea level and the approach is seasonal. Early October can still work, but conditions near Kunzum can change rapidly.
Only activate Chandratal if all three conditions are confirmed close to the travel date.
Milano Travelers recommendation: If even one of these three conditions is uncertain, skip Chandratal and continue toward Manali during daylight.
Manali → Mandi → Bilaspur → Chandigarh
Descend from the mountains and return to a more comfortable road section.
This is your recovery day after the high-altitude section. Take regular breaks, stay hydrated and avoid rushing.
Optional evening in Chandigarh
- Sukhna Lake
- Sector 17 area
- Early dinner
- Vehicle check
- Prepare for the final Delhi drive
Chandigarh → Delhi
Final return drive and completion of the Spiti Valley road trip.
Leave after breakfast and keep the final day comfortable. Your objective is to return home safely rather than maximise sightseeing.

Budget Stay Strategy for 4 Adults + 1 Child
For this trip, parking, heating and hot water are more important than luxury.
Family Homestay / Main Market Hotel
Prefer a property with parking, hot water, family rooms and easy access from NH-5. Confirm late check-in availability before booking.
Family Homestay with Mountain View
Kalpa has many family-run accommodation options. Select one with reliable heating, hot water and vehicle parking.
Hotel / Homestay Near Kaza Market
Kaza is the most practical base in Spiti. Staying close to the market makes food, fuel and basic supplies easier to access.
Budget Family Hotel
After crossing the high-altitude section, choose a comfortable property with parking, hot water and breakfast.
🏨 Important Accommodation Advice
October is shoulder/late season in high Spiti. Do not rely on a generic "open all year" listing. Call the property before departure and confirm that it will actually be operating on your date.
For Chandratal, never treat an online listing alone as proof that the camp will be operating.
Suzuki Fronx Petrol/CNG: Vehicle Preparation
The Fronx can be used for a carefully planned road trip, but Spiti requires preparation because the road conditions become very different from normal highways.
